Learn Basic Spanish

Learn Basic SpanishIf you have decided to learn basic Spanish then it makes sense to think carefully about how to accomplish it. In this article I want to share my experience about how I learned basic Spanish. When I first started to study Spanish, I didn’t know a word; actually I knew one word “hola,” of course I thought it was written the way it sounds “ola”!

When I started to learn basic Spanish, my method to learn Spanish was very simple. I believed that I could take any English word, find the equivalent word in Spanish, and put the Spanish words together to have a complete sentence.  Obviously, it didn’t take me long to realize that my theory wouldn’t work.

For example, in English we use the subject in the sentence to distinguish the person who does the action. However, in Spanish, you don’t have to use the subject in the sentence. Instead, the construction of the verb shows the owner of the action. Also, in Spanish, adjectives generally come after the nouns whereas usually coming before the nouns as in English. A simple example is as follows:

English: strong coffee

Spanish: café fuerte (coffe Strong)

If you don’t know anything when you start to learn basic Spanish, you may get a little confused at first because of the structural differences of English and Spanish. But you shouldn’t let this differences discourage you. Instead, you should give yourself time to understand these differences as you start to get used to Spanish through your studies.

After familiarizing yourself with the basic characteristics of Spanish, you should start to learn the most common words and phrases in Spanish. For example, you can start from some basic phrases such as some common greetings. Some examples of these greetings are:

hello (hola),

goodbye (adiós)

good morning (buenos días)

good afternoon (buenas tardes)

I’ll give you some great news here that will ease and increase your Spanish vocabulary building enormously. Did you know that even before you learn Spanish you already know several thousand Spanish words? You are probably not aware of these Spanish words but when you see them, you will be surprised that some are exactly the same as in English, and others are so similar that you will recognize them the second you see them. The good news is if you start studying those words or phrases you can learn hundreds of Spanish words just in days.

For example, the following example is a short list of those Spanish words that are exactly the same in English :

popular capital animal hotel
radio conductor probable cable
actor ideal flexible central

How about the following words; can you guess what their meanings are?

Atlantico restaurante Pacifico importante dramatico
presidente constructivo permanente atractivo medicina
optimista dentista artista confusión invitación

While you are studying the daily words and phrases, you should also study how to pronounce them properly. It is very essential to pronounce words correctly from the beginning because if you keep pronouncing them wrong, then it will be almost impossible to fix your pronunciation later on. The good news is that if you give importance to Spanish pronunciation, you will get good results easily because Spanish pronunciation is not as complicated as English pronunciation.

My final advice for you is that you consider the different ways to learn basic Spanish. Decide wisely between the alternative learning methods. Choose the method which you think will work best for you. I personally do not recommend studying by books.
